Desktop as a Service (DaaS)

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) defines Cloud Computing as the following:

“Cloud computing is a model for enabling convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction.”

Desktop as a Service falls into this definition and is an extension of virtual desktop.  To provide a true DaaS, we want to manage the personalization, decouple the applications from the operating system and decouple the operating system from the desktop.  This allows users to connect from any device, provides policy based application control and provides a consistent work experience.

There are several business drivers and service improvements in implementing Desktop as a Service.  Some of these include: data security, reduce time to market, reduce deployment costs, allow for a faster Windows 7 migration,  improved business continuity , improved software self-provisioning, plus many more
